Canon 7D: Just the Beginning

05/22/10

I  had an idea about how amazing the new Canon 5D and 7D HDSLR cameras were (20K Films bought a Canon 7D from Calumet Photographic–highly highly recommend them and we’ll be teaching a basic HDSLR workshop with them in Sept. 2010— about two months ago and used it to shoot this video), but yesterday, I really got a glimpse into how much they will change independent filmmaking forever, making  easier and more affordable to make an amazing quality picture.

Yesterday, I wandered into an equipment rental house looking for options for camera rigs for the 7D, and got to meet not only an amazing equipment rental manager,  but a First AC on some major films who were both kind enough to talk to my boyfriend and I about their thoughts on the Canon 5D and lenses you can stick on that thing thanks to a handy little adapter made in Poland. (More on that after we buy it and test it out this summer). Apparently this adapter will allow you to mount PL lenses on the 5D and the 7D which is great for indie filmmakers.

Also mentioned by one of these nice fellows is that the 5Ds are being customized to work more fully and intuitively with indie filmmakers. You can read more about that here.

Thank you to the two nice fellows I’m referring to. (Sorry, I’m not mentioning any names because I want to preserve their privacy if they wish it to be preserved, and I didn’t ask them for permission to write about them, so preserve it I will.)

I also want to mention that the First AC wrapped up our talk with, “Well you can make the picture look great, but really in the end, the story is the most important.”  Very true, but if I have to watch another shoddily shot doc, I will scream. Really, with a small investment ($3,000-$5,000) and some well-placed effort and training, you can infinitely upgrade your picture quality for any doc or film with these new HDSLRs.

Oh, and one more thing, apparently there were some stylized shots in the newly released Iron Man 2 that were done with the Canon 5D.  Do you understand how phenomenal these HDSLRs are now?
